Pre-owned Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 1680, with 40mm stainless steel case, bidirectional rotatable steel MK3bis bezel with black aluminium lunette, "Red" (because of the red color of the word "SUBMARINER" printed on the dial) MK4 black Tritium ("SWISS-T<25") dial with creamy hour markers and hands and date indicator at 3 o’clock (through the "Cyclops" window). Original "Twinlock" crown. Plexiglass crystal, automatic movement calibre 1570. Oystersteel bracelet with deployant clasp (refurbished by Michael Young).
This “Red Sub” is a model that Rolex had on market between 1969 and 1976-1977, with the word “SUBMARINER” printed in red. The dial is “Feet First” (depth in feet and meter: “660ft = 200m”). The watch has a MK4 dial: this was the first dial which donned the feet depth rating before that of the meters one. The immediate sign of a MK4 dial lies in this very “ft”: the lower horizontal line on the “f” and the one on the “t” are visibly offset from each other. In this dial configuration, the “660” features “open 6s” and the “SUBMARINER” is printed on a white baselayer. At 6 o’clock we can find the text “SWISS-T<25” (meaning the luminous paint is tritium based).
The inserts on the Rolex “Red” Submariner 1680 vary depending on the production year. This specific watch has a MK3bis bezel. We can identify it by looking at the “4” in the “40” marker - the space inside the 4 is a trapeze. The bracelet is 9315, with 280 type end-links: these are folded steel links (from 1970 to circa 1976).
In a very good condition, the cream color of the hands, the pearl of the bezel and the indices of the dial are really beautiful. Watch only (without original box and papers).
The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic sport watches of all time. Its history and evolution has been constant since its first appearance in the market, during the early 1950s. Launched in 1966, the Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 came in a famous variant known as "Red Sub", because of the red color of the word "SUBMARINER" printed on the dial.

The Reference 1680 was introduced 10 years after the Submariner 5512 came to market and 16 years after the Submariner made its debut and was the eventual successor to one of Rolex’s longest serially produced references. The 1680 brought a major innovation to the Submariner line, with the addition of a date window underneath the "Cyclops" date magnifier. Also the Ref. 1680 is labeled as waterproof up to 200 meters and has a chronometer status.
The calibre inside is the 1570 with a date disc (already featured in the Datejust and GMT-Master). From 1971, the movement was equipped with "Hacking Seconds": when you want to set your Submariner’s time, the seconds hand stops allowing you for a more precise setting. The date mechanism is “Quick Switch” and “Slow Set”.
