Product details:

Rolex Submariner 5513 "Meters First" Dial (1970)

*Full Set*

Pre-owned Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513, with a 40mm stainless steel case, bidirectional rotatable steel bezel with black aluminium lunette, black matte dial with Tritium indices and hands. Plexiglass crystal, automatic movement calibre 1520. Original Oystersteel bracelet in a very good condition.

As this is an early generation of matte dial, it still has the metric units first ("Meters first" dial), displaying the depth capability in meters (200m) before the equivalent depth in feet (660ft). And it is indicated by the open chapter ring around the outer perimeter (what makes it "open" is that the hash marks are not connected by a solid ring on the outside edge).
Other important characterictics: the "L" in "ROLEX" is centered under the coronet and is closer to the "E" than to the "O"; the "6s" in in the depth rating are semi-open; the "S" in "SUBMARINER" has a very characteristic shape with the top part of the "S" straight accross, and the middle horizontal portion closer to the top part than the bottom portion of the "S"; the "SWISS - T < 25" marking at the bottom of the dial is across a total of 5 minute hash marks.

In a very good state of preservation. With original box and papers.

Read more about this watch...

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic sport watches of all the time. It's history and evolution has been constant since its first appearance in the market, during the early 1950s. The Rolex Submariner 5513 was introduced in 1962 (and ot was in production till 1989), just 3 years after the 5512 made its debut, and the main difference between 5513 and its predecessor is that it doesn't contain a movement certified as a chronometer by COSC. So the "SUPERTATIVE CHRONOMETER"/ "OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" text seen on the 5512 is not here.

The earliest Submariner Ref. 5513 examples were equipped with glossy dials with gilt text. These examples are "Meters first" Submariners. Around 1969, Rolex made the switch to matte black dials for the Submariner 5513. There is where it gets tricky though because, during this period, there are examples of matte dial "Meters first" and matte dial "Feets first" models. Rolex eventually began exclusively producing matte dial "Feet first" Submariner 5513 versions in the early 1970s.

This 5513 transitioned to a new movement, the caliber 1520. The 1520 ran at a slightly higher frecuency of 2,75 Hz (19.800 BPH), but used a lower-cost regulator and balance spring, so with a bit of innovation came a bit of cost-savings. It was never intendent to be COSC-certified, thus making it a good fit for the 5513.
