Rolex Submariner 5513 "Bart Simpson" Dial (1966)

*With Box*

Pre-owned Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513, with a 40mm stainless steel case, bidirectional rotatable steel bezel with black (faded gray) aluminium lunette, black "Tropical" gilt, glossy dial with Tritium indices and hands with a very beautiful patina. Plexiglass crystal, automatic movement calibre 1520. Original Oystersteel bracelet in a very good condition.

Made for a short period in the 1960s (most seem to have been made in 1966), these Submariners 5513 were the last to feature gilt (gold) printing and they have a very distinctive coronet on the dial. The points of the coronet were relatively flat and stubby, not unlike the Bart Simpson's hair.

Printing style: close spacing in the word "ROLEX", the crosses on the "t" and "f" in "ft" (200m = 660ft) are in line. Like all gilt Submariners, these watches are "Meters First" dial, displaying the depth capability in meters (200m) before the equivalent depth in feet (660ft).
It is important to also note that the gilt writing on Rolex dials was in fact done first then a lacquer coating was placed on top of the dial. These "Bart Simpson" Submariners seem particularly prone to "crazing" a funky aging of the lacquer, but which can give a great natural vintage look to the watch. The type of lacquer used for the late gilt dials have a strong tendency to discolour. This dials have colors ranging from caramel to dark brown.
These Submariners also featured a unique mixture of Tritium and other photoluminiscent materials that often makes the patina on the lume to be a warm tan, nicely complimenting the gilt writing.
As this is a later generation gilt dial 5513, it is indicated by the open chapter ring around the outer perimeter (what makes it "open" is that the gilt hash marks are not connected by a solid ring on the outside edge).

In a very good state of preservation. With original box (without papers).

Read more about this watch...

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic sport watches of all the time. It's history and evolution has been constant since its first appearance in the market, during the early 1950s. The Rolex Submariner 5513 was introduced in 1962 (and ot was in production till 1989), just 3 years after the 5512 made its debut, and the main difference between 5513 and its predecessor is that it doesn't contain a movement certified as a chronometer by COSC. So the "SUPERTATIVE CHRONOMETER"/ "OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" text seen on the 5512 is not here.

This 5513 transitioned to a new movement, the caliber 1520. The 1520 ran at a slightly gigher frecuency of 2,75 Hz (19.800 BPH), but used a lower-cost regulator and balance spring, so with a bit of innovation came a bit of cost-savings. It was never intendent to be COSC-certified, thus making it a good fit for the 5513.
