Rolex Submariner 5512 "4-Line" Dial (1968)

*With original box*

Pre-owned Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512, with a 40mm steel case, bidirectional rotatable steel bezel with black (faded grey) aluminium lunette, black matte "4-line" dial with beige patina Tritium ("SWISS - T<25") indices and hands. Plexiglass crystal, automatic movement calibre 1560. Original Oystersteel bracelet.

Depending on the production year, there are 3 distinct types of crown guards found on the Submariner Ref. 5512. The square shapes of the crown guards (square crown guards - SCG) on the very first wave of the Ref. 5512, blocked the crown so much that it made it dificult to wind. After realizing that the square crown guards could be refined, Rolex reshaped them to what collectors today call "eagle beak" crown guards because of how they taper down to their final point. Then they were quickly changed to a more pointed style. About 5 years after the introduction of the pointed crown guards (PCG), Rolex switched to the crown guards silhouette yet again, to a more rounded shape (like on this example that we offer you), which became the standard shape throughout the remainder of the Submariner Ref. 5512's production run.

While all Rolex Submariner 5512 came equipped with black dials, there are 2 main versions. The earlier editions came with glossy black dials with gilt (gold) text up until about 1967. Rolex then replaced this style of dial with matte black dials with white printing (like on this example that we offer you).

The dials of the Ref. 5512 also evolved over its manufacturing run. Early models of the Rolex Submariner 5512 were equiped with non-chronometer certified movements calibre 1530, therefore didn't include the ubiquitous "SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" ("SCOC") text on the dial, these versions are referred to "2-line" Submariner 5512 since their glossy/ gilt black dials only have 2 lines of (gilt) text. Once the Submariner 5512 was outfitted with chronometer-rated calibre 1560 (and later the calibre 1570), the dial then became a "4-line" Submariner 5512 because it includes the "SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" designation. The "4-line" editions were first available with glossy dials with gilt text, followed by matte black dials with white printed text - like this example that we offer you.

A closer look at different dials of the Rolex Submariner 5512 reveals that Rolex changed up the placement of the depth rating. Early editions (1959-1969) - and this includes all of the early glossy/ gilt dials and some of the matte dials (like this one from the 196) included the meters units first where the dials indicate "200m = 660ft" for their depth ratings. Rolex later switched it up to have the feet units rating first where the dials read "660ft = 200m" - a practice that continued until the end of the Ref. 5512's production run.

In a very good state of preservation. With original box (without papers).

Read more about this watch...

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic sport watches of all the time. It's history and evolution has been constant since its first appearance in the market, during the early 1950s. The Rolex Submariner 5512 was in production from 1959 until the late 1970s. The Rolex Submariner 5512 brought about several notable changes to the brand's famous dive watch family - for instance, it grew in size to 40mm from the 38mm case diameter of previous models, and it also introduced crown guards to the collection for the very first time.

In addition to the different depth rating configurations, the "SUBMARINER" word placement on the Ref. 5512 also changed during its manufacturing period. The "SUBMARINER" name on the dial always came after the depth rating until the mid-1970s when Rolex began placing it above the depth rating. This became a standard and to this day, the "SUBMARINER" name is always placed before the depth rating and "SCOC" text.

Although the vintage Rolex Explorer 1655 goes by the nickname, "Steve McQueen", that is not the Rolex watch the actor wore. "The King of Cool", in fact, wore a Submariner 5512 as his daily watch.
