Rolex GMT-Master 1675 "Tiger Eye" "Nipple Dial" (1976)

*With box*

Pre-owned Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675, with a 40mm stainless steel and yellow gold case, yellow gold bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel with brown and gold ("Tiger Eye") aluminum lunette, brown matte Tritium "T SWISS T" dial with yellow gold "Nipple" indices, yellow gold hour, minutes, seconds and GMT hour hand with arrowhead, date indicator at 3 o’clock with cyclops magnifier. Plexiglass crystal. Automatic movement calibre 1570. Oyster steel and yellow gold bracelet with Oysterlock safety deployant clasp.

Over the years, Rolex has developed, changed and experimented not only with the GMT-Master model but more specifically the color of the bidirectional rotating bezel. Since Rolex launched the first red and blue ("Pepsi") bezel alternative, Rolex has released a number of different bezel colors since then, but one bezel color that stands out and which has gotten a particular fanbase and appreciation among collectors is the Rolex "Tiger Eye".

This variant on the Rolex GMT-Master carved the way for the “Rootbeer” which is the modern version of this model. The "Tiger Eye" is the variant introduced in the 70's which  features a brown dial and a bezel that is both brown and gold that is reminiscent of the chatoyant gemsote with the same name (tiger eye stone). Likewise, the conical shape of the gold hour markers inspired the name "Nipple Dial". The “Nipple Dial” is a specific dial style found on select vintage Rolex GMT-Master and Submariner watches (depending on the watch, some "Nipple Dials" can be black, brown, or blue) with slightly protruding hour markers made of precious metals. These applied round indexes are always crafted in yellow gold and are filled with luminescence for optimal legibility in low light. Sitting alongside the applied yellow gold round hour markers on the Rolex "Nipple Dials" are the familiar baton markers at 6 and 9 o’clock, in addition to the inverted triangular index at 12 o’clock (these 3 indexes are also applied, yellow gold, and lume-filled).

The watch is furnished with a brown matte dial that boasts a golden Rolex logo crown at 12 o’clock. This is a MK3 dial, commonly referred to as "Radial dial". The MK3 dial is defined not by the fonts, but by the lume plot placement. Relative to all the other versions of the matte dial 1675, the lume plots on this dial are more at the middle, giving it a unique look. The "GMT-MASTER" font is much different than the rest of the dial and looks very similar to the printing seen on the Ref. 6542. The "SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" font is tall and narrow relative to the other variations. The lume is lightly waffled and the font printing is very prominent - from a side angle the white printing appears very 3D and domed.

In good state of conservation (serviced in 2016 at Official Rolex Dealer). With original box (that doesn’t correspond to its time and the inner pad is missing), service certificate dated 2016 and translation booklet.

Read more about this watch...

As the world became a global territory for industrialization, a growing population in the need to travel between countries boosted civil aviation. In 1953,
Rolex was entrusted to design a technical wristwatch specially for Pan Am’s crew. The result of this important task was the GMT-Master: able to read the time in 2 different time zones simultaneously. Rolex furnished the GMT-Master with a pair of center hour and minute hands to indicate the local time along with an extra 24-hour hand to display a second time zone by pointing to the 24-hour-marked rotating bezel.

From 1959 to 1980, the Rolex GMT-Master 1675 was the only GMT model produced by Rolex. It became immensely popular and, as is Rolex’s style, was incrementally improved throughout those 21 years. In 1965, Rolex rolled out the 1575 movement, which beat at faster 19.800 VPH and was engraved [1570] for its base calibre. The 1575 movement was later upgraded with a hacking function around 1971; this version of the 1575 remained the same throughout the rest of the 1675 production run. The calibre 1570 is a certified chronometer (COSC) movement. It is an automatic self-winding calibre with 26 jewels with a power reserve of 48 hours.

The two-tone Rolex GMT-Master 1675 was available with a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet. The famous actor Clint Eastwood got his hands on one with a Jubilee bracelet and it was (un)officially the "Clint Eastwood" Rolex GMT-Master 1675 - he wore it in a number of his films, including his 1982 movie "Firefox".
