Read more about this watch...

Longines' first dive watch was the Nautilus Skin Diver Ref. 6921, a 40mm stainless steel model with an external rotating bezel.

Essentially, skin diving is snorkeling. So when you go skin diving, you only wear flippers and a mask/ snorkel, plus a watch, of course. With the rise in popularity of diving in 1950s, we saw the introduction of the so-called skin divers. These watches were lightweight diving watches that often used the same case and had a lower depth rating.

The Nautilus Skin Diver Ref. 6921 was only produced for a couple of years at the end of the 1950s, and it's estimated that only 550 examples were even produced across 3 references: 6921-1, 6921-2, and 6921-3. The 3 sub-references simply represent separate production runs: the dials are the same, with the Longines logo at 12 o'clock and "Automatic" script at 6 o'clock. The hour hand features a broad arrow with subtantial lume, with the thinner minute hand and also filled with lume to facilitate easy legibility.

Inside ticks Longines' 19AS automatic calibre, a 19 jewels movement that beats a low 18.000 BPH and with 39-hour power resistance, but with a unice construction. There's perlage finishing around the caliber's perimeter, with the automatic rotor taking up a relatively large amount of space, while the movement itself sits smaller in diameter and thicker. First introduced in 1952, it was used in a number of Longines models and produced in multiple variations.

The case was manufactured by Ervin Piquerez, S.A. (EPSA), and features the company's famous patented case-sealing "Compressor" technology that improves water resistance. The Ref. 6921 was rated to 150 meters of water resistance and is one of very few models with a single crown.

The external bezel was made of a fragile Bakelite (that's why on our exampe it's cracked between 6 and 7 o'clock).

One of the nice details of the Nautilus Skin Diver is the case back, which features an engraving of a diver with a harpoon.
